Introduce yourself,
tell us about you (me!) Well here goes..
Art, writing and athletics are things I have always been good at. As a creative child and adolescent, art and writing were the way I expressed the joy and anguish of my soul. My mother was a teacher and so there were always papers, paints and art smocks at hand. In my youth, as now, I kept a notebook under my bed and often wrote at night; I could not sleep if I did not jot down the ideas that were in my head. I excelled in fine arts, english and creative writing in high school and in University. Though the focus of my post secondary study was elsewhere it was my related creative and written projects that earned me the most respect. In high school and University I wrote and did graphic work for school papers and newsletters. When I entered the workforce, I somehow managed to do the same, taking on written and graphic assignments whether it was in my job description or not. In time these elements often became part of my assignment. In hours of crisis, I turn to art and journaling as therapy.
As a mother I have embellished or made many things for my children, striving to elevate the everyday. My babies wore hand embroidered, cotton nappies; they were subjected to on going photo shoots. I sang, recited poetry and read great literature to my progeny since the day they were born. I am known for my birthday parties, always clever, imaginative, and homemade. Today my children make gifts and cards for all occasions. We have an art studio at home that we all share. I edit my children’s writing as both are avid writers and readers, and with my help and their strong will, they have self published. I am thrilled to recognize the gene in both offspring.
Through art and language I record the thoughts, prayers and achievements of my family. I am constantly saying to my friends “you should make one, its so easy”, “oh you must write that one down” as if somehow in the making and the writing we will find ourselves. As a friend, I diligently write elaborate Christmas letters to capture a fragment of the stories that reside in my heart. This fills my need produce at least some small form of written word. I have always had something to say. I have always had something to make, something to write. The more I create, the more I realize I will never be finished creating. Once started I find it hard to stop. Such is passion. As I work, I feel the comfort of wearing these old and favorite jeans, the ones that fit so well. I feel that I am home in the process.
And this is who I am, artist, author and mother. The same person I have always been. Something old, something new, and yet someone still grounded in the talents I learned perhaps before my birth, shaped through the years, by my experience.
